Jayson Tatum Faces Criticism For “Stealing” Kawhi Leonard’s Celebration

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has found himself at the center of yet another debate—this time, over his on-court celebrations. During Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, Tatum helped lead the Celtics to a 115-93 victory, but it wasn’t his performance that had fans talking.

Instead, it was his post-bucket celebration, which many believe was a direct imitation of Kawhi Leonard’s signature “hand salute” gesture.

Tatum’s gesture, widely associated with Leonard’s time on the San Antonio Spurs, gained popularity after the Spurs’ 2014 NBA Finals victory. When Tatum mimicked the move at Madison Square Garden, social media erupted with reactions—many accusing him of lacking originality.

Fans took to X to voice their opinions, with some labeling Tatum as the “most unoriginal player” and others calling him the “fakest superstar out there”.

This isn’t the first time Tatum has faced backlash for allegedly borrowing from NBA legends.

Despite the noise, Tatum remained focused on the game, finishing with 22 points and helping the Celtics secure their first win of the series.

While the criticism continues to circulate online, the real question is: Does it matter? NBA players often draw inspiration from those who came before them, and celebrations are no exception.

With the Celtics now back in the fight, Tatum’s focus will be on Game 4—where he’ll have another chance to silence the critics, not with gestures, but with his game.
