Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is adding another chapter to his storied career, but this time, it’s off the court. Curry has been named an assistant general manager for the men’s and women’s basketball programs at his alma mater, Davidson College. The announcement marks a historic moment, as Curry becomes the first active player in a major U.S. professional sport to take on an administrative role with an NCAA team.
Curry’s new position is part of Davidson’s efforts to adapt to the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly with the rise of name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities and the anticipated implementation of revenue sharing in college sports. In this volunteer advisory role, Curry will work alongside Davidson’s general manager, Austin Buntz, and fellow assistant GM Matt Berman, a former Davidson soccer player and current stakeholder in Burnley FC.
As part of his commitment, Curry, along with his wife Ayesha and longtime Davidson supporters, has established an eight-figure fund to support the college’s basketball programs. This initiative aims to provide resources for student-athletes to thrive both on and off the court, ensuring they have access to top-tier facilities, education, and opportunities.
Curry’s connection to Davidson runs deep. During his three seasons with the Wildcats (2006-2009), he set the NCAA single-season record for three-pointers, earned conference player of the year honors twice, and led the team to the Elite Eight in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. In 2022, Curry completed his undergraduate degree and was inducted into Davidson’s Hall of Fame.
This new role allows Curry to give back to the institution that played a pivotal role in his development, while also setting a precedent for active athletes to contribute to college sports in meaningful ways.
