Brian Windhorst: Luka Dončić Extension With Lakers Not A Guarantee

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently shared a surprising update on the future of Luka Doncic with the Los Angeles Lakers. During an episode of “Get Up,” Windhorst stated that it is “not a guarantee” that Doncic will sign a contract extension with the Lakers this summer.

One of the main factors influencing Doncic’s decision is the financial aspect. Had he remained with the Dallas Mavericks, he would have been eligible for a five-year, $345 million supermax contract. However, after the trade to the Lakers, the most the team can offer is a four-year, $229 million deal. This significant difference in potential earnings means Doncic might consider a shorter-term extension to maximize his financial gain.

Another crucial factor is how well Doncic fits with the Lakers’ organization and his ability to play alongside LeBron James, and how the team develops. The two ball-dominant superstars will need to find a way to coexist on the court, which could impact Doncic’s long-term plans with the team. Windhorst noted that Doncic is entering an entirely new environment and may need time to assess how things work out.

LeBron James’ future with the Lakers could also play a role in Doncic’s decision. James has a player option for next season, and while there’s no indication he wants to leave, his contract status adds another layer of uncertainty.

Windhorst emphasized the need to watch and see how everything unfolds. He suggested that Doncic might want to take a shorter deal and re-evaluate his options after gaining more experience with the Lakers. The Lakers will need to work hard to convince Doncic that they are the right fit for him long-term.
