In a recent interview, Basketball Hall of Famer and Team USA managing director Grant Hill shared his thoughts on Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown’s future with Team USA, despite his surprising exclusion from the 2024 Olympic roster. Hill’s insights provide a deeper understanding of the selection process and offer a hopeful outlook for Brown’s potential Olympic journey.
Jaylen Brown, the reigning NBA Finals MVP, was widely expected to be a part of Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, the decision to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard with Derrick White instead of Brown sparked significant controversy and debate among fans and analysts. Brown himself expressed his disappointment through cryptic social media posts, hinting at his belief that external factors, such as his past criticisms of Nike, might have influenced the decision.
In an interview on “All The Smoke’s Open Run” with Rachel Nichols, Grant Hill addressed the controversy head-on. Hill emphasized that the selection process is complex and involves multiple considerations, including team fit and chemistry. He acknowledged Brown’s exceptional talent and contributions to the Celtics’ success but clarified that the decision was not personal.
“I’m confident he and I will sit down at some point and talk about it and get to some level of understanding,” Hill said. “Look, he’ll be a candidate if he wants in ’28… One thing I’ve learned. You can’t take anything personal in this role. And so, I haven’t personalized anything. My goal, my objective is to win. As soon as hopefully that happens, we pivot and start looking ahead to the future”.

Despite the current setback, Hill expressed strong confidence in Brown’s future with Team USA. He highlighted Brown’s potential to be a key player in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, provided he remains interested and continues to perform at a high level. Hill’s comments suggest that Brown’s exclusion from the 2024 roster is not a reflection of his abilities but rather a strategic decision based on the team’s immediate needs.
