Brooklyn Nets’ ‘Biggie Night’ To Honor The Notorious B.I.G.

20 years ago, on March 9, 1997, Christopher George Latore Wallace (aka Notorious B.I.G) was killed by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles.

Biggie was one of the best artists to ever exist in hip hop music, and there are not many people who embody the city of Brooklyn more than the Big Poppa.

The Brooklyn Nets will be honoring Wallace during their home game against the Knicks tonight. The Nets dubbed tonight as ‘Biggie Night’ and they will celebrate Wallace’s legacy.

“Biggie’s closest family and friends will be in attendance to remember him throughout the night, with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and Biggie’s mom Voletta Wallace paying tribute to The Notorious B.I.G. with special pre-game and halftime ceremonies. Invited guests include Biggie’s children, T’Yanna and C.J. Wallace, Mark Pitts, and Wayne Barrow.”

“Music from Biggie and the artists he inspired will be played throughout the game, the Brooklynettes will perform two special routines, and at halftime, DJ Enuff will play for the crowd. Fans will also see a video montage commemorating Biggie’s life, and fans are encouraged to participate in the conversation on social media using #NetsBiggieNight.”

That’s what it reads in a recently released statement by the Nets.

Some people are critcising the Nets for hosting a ‘Biggie Night’ saying things like;

“Nothing like honoring someone that glorified gangs, drugs, crime, violence toward women? Am I missing anything?”

or:

“Gangsta rappers should not be honored in any way, shape or form. Biggie rapped about selling drugs, sleeping around, killing, and love of money (greed)….and they’re going to honor him and bump his music at a game where there’s surely thousands of kids in the crowd? Classy. Why stop there? Maybe they should start honoring porn stars and playing their work on the big screen at halftime.”

I’ve been a fan of Biggie’s music ever since I was a teenager, and I am stoked for Boogie Night. Finally a Nets (and Knicks game) worth watching.
