Former NBA Center Eric Montross Dies Of Cancer At Age 52

 

Former NBA center and college basketball star Eric Montross has died at the age of 52. Montross was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2022 and had been battling the disease since. He died at his home in Chapel Hill..

Montross had the privilege of playing under the guidance of head coach Dean Smith and representing the Tar Heels from 1990-94.

In 1993, Montross held the position of starting center when the Tar Heels triumphed and secured the NCAA championship. His exceptional performance led to him being named first-team All-ACC in 1993.

Following his college career, Montross was selected as a first-round draft pick by the Boston Celtics, where he played for eight seasons in the NBA with the Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, and Toronto Raptors. 

He later transitioned to become an analyst for the Tar Heel Sports Network, dedicating 18 seasons to this role before stepping away from the microphone this season.
