Dennis Schröder Letting Fans Vote On His New Jersey Number Was A Big Mistake

Early in the 2019-20 NBA regular season, the Los Angeles Lakers offered Dennis Schröder a 4-year, $84 million contract extension that was eventually declined by the 27-year old point guard. Schröder was reportedly willing to stay, but was looking for a bigger pay raise at around $100-120 million.

Schröder had a good start for the Lakers and came in help when LeBron James and Anthony Davis were battling injuries in the regular season. However, an abysmal production in the playoffs quickly lowered his value and put him a tight situation in this year’s free agency.

So instead of a $84M payday with the Lakers that was on his table earlier, Dennis had to take a $5.9M offer sheet from the Celtics. While we don’t know if he’ll be starting, or if he’ll be the team’s 6th man, he’ll get enough minutes to show the world that he’s worth more than his current contract and play for a bigger payday next year.

Due to missing out on so much money (for now), Dennis has found himself as a laughing stock among fans. The point guard meanwhile is putting his focus on the Celtics and the new season. But unfortunately, he can’t wear his #17 jersey in Boston, because it is retired (John Havlicek). This is why Schröder has asked his fans to come up with suggestions.

My jersey number with the Celtics – the choice is yours!

In the expired Ideation Mission, you made dope suggestions for my new jersey number! With the end of this voting on Friday 09.17.21 at 17:17 german local time, I say goodbye to the number 17 for the upcoming season.

Unfortunately, your favorite number, which is the 38, is already taken by Sam Hauser, which is why it is eliminated from the voting. You can now vote on the remaining top 5 suggestions and make your final decision!

I am really excited about which number I will wear next season!

The top 5 are now being up for vote. Unfortunately for Schröder, as you can see, #84 – the amount of money he would have made had he signed that Lakers contract  – is one of the options. But worse for Dennis though, is that #96 also is one of the options.

Schröder’s hometown Braunschweig, that he loves, and Hannover, the bigger city nearby, are arch-rivals. So fans from Hannover’s football club Hannover 96, have come to vote for #96 in large numbers. If they continue to do so, Schröder might end up having his arch-rivals number on the back of his jersey.
