The Denver Nuggets reportedly believed Peyton Watson could have returned before the end of their playoff series, but internally there was concern that the young forward was being overly cautious with his comeback because of the potential impact on his next contract.
According to Bennett Durando of The Denver Post, five league sources said members of the Nuggets organization felt strongly that Watson was physically capable of playing by the latter stages of the series. The concern, according to the report, was that he was slow-playing his return in order to avoid jeopardizing his long-term value.
A source close to Watson also told The Denver Post that Aaron Gordon was among those advising him to be cautious with the comeback. From Watson’s perspective, the decision was not necessarily about avoiding competition, but about protecting himself from returning too early and potentially worsening an injury at a critical stage of his career.
For Denver, however, the timing created understandable frustration. Playoff windows are short, and every available rotation player matters. If members of the organization believed Watson was healthy enough to contribute, seeing him remain sidelined would naturally have created tension.
For Watson, the calculation was different.
Young players approaching major contract decisions have to weigh immediate team needs against long-term health and financial security. Returning too soon from an injury can carry consequences that extend far beyond one series, particularly for a player whose next deal could be heavily influenced by availability and performance.
The reported involvement of Gordon is especially interesting, because it suggests Watson was receiving advice from a respected veteran teammate, who has previously come back from an injury too early, to prioritize caution rather than force his way back before he felt ready.
