NBA Gambling Probe Expands: Lakers, LeBron James Associates Cooperating In League Investigation

The NBA’s ongoing investigation into illegal sports gambling has expanded to include multiple franchises, with the Los Angeles Lakers among the teams asked to submit internal documents and electronic devices.

Two longtime associates of LeBron James, assistant athletic trainer Mike Mancias and executive administrator Randy Mims, are reportedly cooperating with league investigators.

According to multiple reports, the NBA has requested that several teams hand over cell phones, emails, and internal documents as part of a widening probe into illegal sports betting and potential game-related misconduct. The investigation is being conducted with the assistance of the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and follows a series of federal arrests that have rocked the league.

The probe gained national attention after the FBI arrested former NBA player and coach Damon Jones, along with Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, in connection with illegal gambling and rigged poker games.

The Lakers have confirmed that at least 10 staff members have been asked to provide access to their communications and devices. Among them are Mike Mancias, LeBron James’ personal trainer and performance coach for over two decades, and Randy Mims, a close friend and longtime executive administrator who has worked with James since his early NBA days.

Both Mancias and Mims have voluntarily complied, turning over their mobile phones and other requested materials to investigators. There is no indication at this time that either individual is suspected of wrongdoing.

“They’re cooperating fully,” a league source told The Athletic. “This is about transparency and ensuring the integrity of the game.”

While the involvement of James’ inner circle has raised eyebrows, LeBron James himself is not under investigation, and there is no evidence suggesting his involvement in any illicit activity. James has not publicly commented on the matter, and the Lakers organization has declined to issue a formal statement beyond confirming their cooperation with the league.

The NBA’s internal investigation comes amid increased scrutiny from Congress, which has expressed concern over the league’s handling of gambling-related issues. The rise of legalized sports betting across the U.S. has prompted calls for stricter oversight and transparency in professional sports.

Commissioner Adam Silver has previously voiced support for regulated sports betting but emphasized the league’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the game. The current investigation is seen as a critical test of that commitment.

The NBA has not provided a timeline for the conclusion of the investigation. Sources indicate that additional teams may be contacted in the coming weeks as the league continues to examine potential links between team personnel and illegal gambling operations.
