What began as a promising rise for Jonathan Kuminga in the Bay Area has now spiraled into one of the most dramatic offseason sagas in the NBA. According to a report from Hoops Wire, the 22-year-old forward is seriously considering a departure from the Golden State Warriors, with strong interest in joining either the Sacramento Kings or Phoenix Suns.
Kuminga, a restricted free agent, has reportedly grown frustrated with his role in Golden State and is seeking both a larger opportunity on the court and financial security. Last season, he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while emerging as the Warriors’ third-leading scorer behind Stephen Curry, and Jimmy Butler. But despite his production, Kuminga’s playoff minutes were inconsistent, and his relationship with head coach Steve Kerr has reportedly deteriorated.
Multiple sources told Hoops Wire that Kuminga “doesn’t have a good relationship” with Kerr, a dynamic that has reportedly fueled his desire to leave. The young wing was benched during key playoff moments, and the lack of trust between player and coach appears to be a major sticking point.
Kuminga’s camp is said to be pushing for a five-year deal, but Golden State has been cautious amid the NBA’s new financial restrictions.
“We’re trying to be responsible,” a Warriors executive told Spotrac. “We still love Jonathan… but we’re not going to compromise our roster-building ability now, or in the future”.
Both the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns have made concrete offers to Golden State in recent weeks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The Kings reportedly pitched a package involving Devin Carter, Dario Šarić, and two second-round picks, while the Suns have floated names like Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale in sign-and-trade discussions.
Kuminga has already spoken with Sacramento’s front office, including GM Scott Perry and coach Doug Christie, and is said to be “open-minded” about joining the Kings. The appeal? A starting role and a chance to be a centerpiece rather than a rotational piece.
Despite the offers, Golden State has remained steadfast. The team is reportedly demanding a first-round pick, a young player, and no bad contracts in return. That stance has stalled negotiations, leaving Kuminga in limbo as the Warriors’ offseason plans remain frozen.
Whether Kuminga ultimately lands in Sacramento, Phoenix, or elsewhere, one thing is clear: he’s ready to bet on himself. And if Golden State isn’t willing to meet his demands, on the court or on paper, he may soon be wearing a different jersey.
