LeBron James’ partnership with prediction market platform Polymarket has drawn fresh attention after New York filed a lawsuit accusing the company of operating an unlicensed gambling business in the state.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Kathy Hochul announced the lawsuit on Thursday, September 24. The state alleges that Polymarket allows customers to wager on sporting events without complying with New York’s gambling laws, including its licensing and consumer-protection requirements.
Polymarket allows users to buy and sell contracts tied to the outcomes of future events. In sports, those contracts can be linked to game results and other competitive outcomes. New York argues that, regardless of whether the transactions are described as trades or predictions, the platform’s sports markets function as gambling and require state authorization.
The lawsuit seeks to stop Polymarket from operating what the state considers an unlicensed gambling business in New York. It also seeks financial penalties, the surrender of allegedly unlawful profits and restitution for users. State officials have raised concerns that the platform’s offerings could expose consumers, including people younger than New York’s legal gambling age of 21, to financial harm. These are allegations advanced by the state, not findings established by a court.
Polymarket disputes New York’s position and has filed a federal countersuit. The company’s legal challenge is part of a broader dispute over whether prediction markets offering sports-related contracts fall under federal commodities regulation or state gambling laws. The question has become increasingly important as platforms such as Polymarket expand into territory traditionally occupied by licensed sportsbooks.
The case also puts a spotlight on Polymarket’s growing presence in professional sports. James recently became associated with the platform through an endorsement partnership, bringing one of basketball’s most recognizable names to the company’s promotional efforts. James is not accused of wrongdoing in New York’s lawsuit.
