Former NBA guard Delonte West is drawing on the discipline that shaped his basketball career as he works on his recovery. In a recent reflection, West explained how the habits he once relied on to improve as a player have given him a way to approach the challenges he faces away from the court.
West described recovery as a process that demands consistency, commitment and a willingness to put in the work even when progress is difficult to see. He compared following a treatment program, taking prescribed medication and showing up on time to the daily routines that once helped him prepare for NBA games.
“The programs you’re working, which includes taking the proper medications, being on time, showing up… Putting your all into going the extra mile, as if you were the same way you were approaching the gym,” West said.
As a player, West understood that improvement required more than simply appearing at practice. Extra shooting sessions, long hours in the gym and the determination to keep working after others had finished were all part of his approach. Now, he wants to apply that same mindset to his recovery.
“Be a legend in your recovery,” he said.
For West, the comparison is about treating personal progress with the same seriousness he once brought to basketball. He encouraged others facing their own challenges to recognize the effort involved in sticking with a program and to take confidence from the difficult moments they have already made it through.
“You’re going to see how tough you really are. You start realizing how tough you are. You start being able to handle stuff. When you realize, ‘Hey man, I got through that.’”
