Victor Wembanyama Was Already Protecting His Image Before The NBA Could Sell It

Before Victor Wembanyama became an NBA superstar, he was already treating his name like something bigger than a business asset.

According to reporting from The Athletic, Wembanyama turned down marketing opportunities worth millions before entering the NBA, including interest from beverage companies, skincare brands and other major advertisers. At the time, he was reportedly living on roughly $150,000 from his French club salary, not yet earning NBA money, and still chose restraint over quick commercial cash. His camp’s logic was simple: not every check belongs next to his name.

His agent, Jeremy Medjana, explained the philosophy bluntly. Wembanyama’s team did not want him distracted by too many deals and wanted his focus to stay on basketball, recovery and long-term development. That discipline also created a clear line around soda brands. Medjana said they would not connect Wembanyama’s image to companies such as Coca-Cola, adding that “Victor will never sell soda” because he does not want to promote something unhealthy to children.

That stance says plenty about Wembanyama’s unusual relationship with fame. Most teenage phenoms are encouraged to take the money while the hype is hottest. Wembanyama did the opposite. He treated endorsement choices like part of his legacy, not just part of his income.

Now, as the face of the Spurs and one of the NBA’s defining young stars, the decision looks less like stubbornness and more like brand architecture. Wembanyama wants to be associated with excellence, health and purpose. He is not merely trying to become marketable. He is trying to decide what being marketable should mean.

In a league where superstardom often comes with every logo willing to pay, Wembanyama’s refusal is rare. He did not wait until he was rich to develop principles. He turned down millions before the millions were guaranteed.

Before the NBA could sell Victor Wembanyama to the world, he had already decided what he would not sell.
