Game 5 was supposed to reveal which team had truly learned from the first four games. The answer came in Oklahoma City’s rhythm, in its free throws, in its depth, and in the cold control of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
The Thunder beat the Spurs 127-114 on Tuesday night, taking a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Finals and moving within one win of a return trip to the NBA Finals. After San Antonio’s Game 4 defensive masterpiece had tied the series and made Oklahoma City look vulnerable, the Thunder answered like a defending champion should: not with panic, but with pressure.
Gilgeous-Alexander led the night with 32 points and nine assists. He shot only 7-for-19 from the field, but that number almost missed the point. SGA won the game by living at the line, going 16-for-17 on free throws, turning every reach, every late rotation and every off-balance defender into punishment.
Oklahoma City’s help was decisive. Alex Caruso, scoreless in Game 4, responded with 22 points off the bench. Jared McCain shook off a quiet start and scored 18 of his 20 points after halftime. Chet Holmgren added 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Isaiah Hartenstein gave the Thunder 12 points and 15 boards. Even with injuries forcing Mark Daigneault into adjustments, OKC’s depth again looked like one of the series’ defining weapons.
For San Antonio, the night was full of effort but not enough control. Stephon Castle scored 24, Julian Champagnie added 22, and Victor Wembanyama finished with 20, but Wembanyama shot just 4-for-15 and never fully bent the game to his size. The Spurs pushed late, but defensive lapses, foul trouble and a failed challenge sequence helped Oklahoma City keep the door closed.
Now the series returns to San Antonio for Game 6 with the Spurs facing elimination and the Thunder one win from the Finals. Game 5 did not end the series, but it changed its weight. Oklahoma City has the lead, the MVP-level closer, and the kind of roster that keeps finding new ways to hurt you. San Antonio still has Wembanyama and belief. But after Tuesday, it also has no margin left.
