Matt Barnes Unloads On Stephen A. Smith: “Tap Dancing For The Whole Republican Party”

Matt Barnes has jumped into the latest LeBron James-Stephen A. Smith flare-up, and he did it with no interest in softening the blow.

After Smith criticized James over his recent remarks about Memphis, Barnes publicly blasted the ESPN personality, accusing him of selectively policing other Black public figures while presenting himself as something else entirely.

“I played in Memphis, got a lot of love for the city,” Barnes said “But there’s no doubt that the city needs to upgrade when it comes to its facilities for pro players. But Stephen A., you shouldn’t have a problem with that. You’re talking about his words and what they mean to the Black community. But you’ve been the same man in front of the camera for the last handful of months, disrespecting Serena Williams, disrespecting Jasmine Crockett, disrespecting Kamala Harris, and tap dancing for the whole Republican Party, the whole white Republican Party.

But you got an issue with LeBron talking about a trending topic and his words carry weight, and he doesn’t understand what his words can do to the Black community. Do you understand the bullsh*t you’re talking and what that can do to the Black community?” Barnes added. “We all used to have a lot of love for you, bro, particularly me, because you looked out. But we’re not going to forget the bullsh*t you’re on right now.”

Barnes’ comments came as Smith was already facing scrutiny for attacking James’ optics while revisiting a Memphis conversation Smith himself had entered in the past.

The backdrop here matters. LeBron James drew backlash after joking on Bob Does Sports that a star at his age would not want to be at the Hyatt “in Memphis on a f*cking random-a** Thursday,” and he added that NBA stars broadly agree the Grizzlies should move, naming Nashville as a logical destination. Smith then responded on his platforms by arguing that James handled the subject recklessly, saying,

“I wasn’t dressed in shorts, lolligagging on the golf course with a bunch of peeps that don’t look anything like the folks that reside in Memphis. That’s where it was foul.” Smith also said, “Optics matter. Appearances matter,” while insisting his own prior comments about Memphis were made from a different place and with a different seriousness.

That distinction clearly did not sit well with Barnes. His response was not just a defense of James, but an attack on Smith’s broader public posture.
