OKC Turn Statement Game Into Rout As Lakers Lose Luka Dončić To Hamstring Injury

The Oklahoma City Thunder did not just beat the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. They overwhelmed and dismantled them.

Oklahoma City crushed Los Angeles 139-96, extending its winning streak to four games and improving to 16 wins in its last 17. The Thunder led 82-51 at halftime, the third time this season they have taken a 30-point lead into the break, and remarkably, the second time they have done that against the Lakers.

From the opening minutes, the game had the feel of a mismatch. Luguentz Dort set the tone immediately, scoring 14 points in the first quarter on perfect shooting while also helping lead the defensive effort against Luka Dončić. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 28 points, and Isaiah Joe added 20 as Oklahoma City combined ruthless perimeter shot-making with defensive pressure that never allowed the Lakers to settle into the game.

The Lakers, by contrast, looked overrun. Austin Reaves led them with 15 points, while LeBron James scored 13. Dončić had only 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting before his night ended early, and Los Angeles saw its four-game winning streak snapped in what became its worst loss since a 44-point defeat in 2023.

The most troubling part of the night for Los Angeles was Dončić’s health. The MVP candidate first appeared to injure his left hamstring in the first half, was treated and medically cleared to return after halftime, and then aggravated it in the third quarter before leaving the game with 7:39 remaining in the period. Head coach JJ Redick said afterward that Dončić will undergo an MRI, a significant concern given that he had already missed four games in February with a similar hamstring issue.

That injury turned an ugly loss into something potentially more damaging. Dončić entered the game leading the NBA in scoring at 33.5 points per game, and his form had been a major reason the Lakers had climbed into stronger position in the West. Instead of building on that momentum, Los Angeles left the night with both a blowout defeat and fresh uncertainty around the health of its most explosive offensive player.
