LeBron James Confirms Bronny’s Viral Backboard Story

LeBron James finally weighed in on one of the funniest family stories to come out of the Lakers’ locker room this season, confirming that yes, he once shattered the backboard on a hoop at the family’s Miami home. The moment had gone viral days earlier after Bronny James told reporters that the last time he played his father one-on-one, “he broke a backboard at our house in Miami.”

After the Lakers’ 120-101 win over the Washington Wizards on Monday, James was asked about the story and did not deny it.

“Yeah, we had a hoop in our driveway, I drove around and dunked it, I didn’t mean to shatter the glass, but yeah, I shattered it,” admitted James.

The Lakers’ victory itself was significant as well: James posted the 125th triple-double of his career with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, becoming the oldest player in NBA history to record a triple-double at 41 years and 90 days old.

What makes the story so good is that it fits perfectly into the strange and entertaining overlap of LeBron’s late career and Bronny’s first steps in the league. Just a few days before, the two had already made NBA history by recording the first father-son assist combination in a regular-season game during the Lakers’ win over Brooklyn. That gave Bronny’s anecdote a little extra life, because it arrived at a moment when father and son were already generating a stream of memorable firsts together.
