Mark Cuban’s Regret Over Who He Sold The Mavericks To Is No Longer Subtle

Mark Cuban has spent the past two years trying to clarify his place in the Dallas Mavericks’ new power structure. This time, there was no ambiguity.

Speaking on the Intersections podcast, Cuban said:

“I do not regret selling. I regret who I sold to. I made a lot of mistakes in the process, and I’ll leave it at that,”

a striking admission about the 2023 sale of his majority stake in the franchise to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont. What makes the remark hit so hard is that Cuban has generally been careful, at least publicly, when discussing the Adelson-Dumont ownership era. He has criticized individual basketball decisions since the sale, most notably after Dallas traded Luka Dončić to the Lakers in February 2025, when Cuban said the Mavericks should have received a much stronger return. But this latest comment goes further than basketball disagreement. It sounds like direct remorse over the people involved in the deal itself.

The backdrop helps explain why the line will resonate so sharply in Dallas. Cuban sold his controlling stake in late 2023 but retained roughly 27.7% of the team, meaning he has remained connected to the franchise even as authority shifted to the new ownership group. Since then, the Mavericks have gone through major turbulence, including the Dončić trade, the dismissal of general manager Nico Harrison, and broader leadership changes across the organization.
