When Charlotte Hornets big man Moussa Diabaté was asked whether he had ever been in a car driven by LaMelo Ball, his answer was as short as it was understandable:
“Hell nah. Never will.”

The quote carried obvious context. Earlier this year, Ball was involved in a two-car crash in downtown Charlotte, though he was not injured. The other driver however was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, after Ball had veered into oncoming traffic.
That backdrop, and various other videos of Ball driving recklessly, is what gave Diabaté’s line its edge. It did not read like a random joke about a teammate. It read like a teammate acknowledging, in the most direct possible way, that Ball’s driving reputation is not one he wants to test for himself.
Ball remains one of the Hornets’ defining personalities, a player whose flair on the court often spills into everything else around him. Diabaté’s response fit neatly into that orbit: funny, and just dangerous enough to travel fast.
