Kevin Durant added another major landmark to his career on Saturday, when he passed Michael Jordan for fifth place on the NBA’s all-time regular-season scoring list. Durant reached 32,294 career points during Houston’s 123-122 win over the Miami Heat, moving ahead of Jordan’s 32,292 and climbing into a place on the scoring ladder that carries enormous historical weight.
But in the aftermath of the milestone, Durant did not frame the moment as a claim to Jordan’s legacy. He treated it as a tribute to it. Speaking about the achievement, Durant emphasized that Jordan’s greatness extends far beyond a number on a list, noting that Jordan’s imprint on the game remains larger than any statistical comparison.
“He’s not the leader in points, but his imprint, his impact on the game is so big that it’s always historical even coming close to what he’s done on the basketball court in any type of form. So to be close in points, it’s a true honor. I mean, it’s a test to longevity and loving the game, the stuff that MJ portrayed every day. And that’s what usually what gets you into these places is when you work on your craft religiously and love the game. So that what I took mostly from a lot of these greats that I’ve been able to watch, play against, play with, just how much they love the game.”

It was a revealing response from one of the most gifted scorers the sport has ever seen: even after surpassing Jordan in total points, Durant chose reverence over celebration.
Passing Jordan is not simply about shot-making brilliance. It is also about endurance, discipline and the ability to sustain elite offense across era after era, season after season. Durant himself alluded to that truth when he described the moment as a reflection of longevity and of loving the game deeply enough to keep refining his craft.
There is also something fitting about Durant reaching this territory in his 18th NBA season. Jordan’s legacy was built on dominance, competitive force and a standard of excellence that shaped generations of players. Durant belongs to one of those generations. The basket that pushed Durant past Jordan changed the order of the list. His words afterward explained why the milestone mattered in the first place.
Now, with only four names left ahead of him on the all-time scoring list, Durant’s place in basketball history is beyond debate.
