Fred VanVleet has already nudged people to slow down on the San Antonio Spurs hype, pointing out they haven’t won anything yet to warrant victory laps. Now he’s doubling down.
The Spurs have just clinched a playoff spot for the first time since the 2018-19 season. They’re right there behind the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference, which makes it easy to frame this as a great season.
And it has been a great season. VanVleet just isn’t sold yet. He’d rather wait for the playoffs before deciding whether the Spurs are the real deal.
“The fact of the matter is, they are having a good season. A great season. They’re a really good team, and in the playoffs, we’ll judge them from there. If you’re expecting me to be their number one fan, you got me f*cked up. I couldn’t care less. I’m a Houston Rockets fan.”
