Victor Wembanyama Is Chasing More Than Wins In San Antonio’s Stretch Run

Victor Wembanyama did not hide his ambition after San Antonio’s latest win over the Hornets. The Spurs star said he is focused on taking care of his body because he wants to win both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, adding that he is trying to “press the gas” from now until the end of the season.

“Right now in my mind is taking great care of my body cause I also want to win the MVP, and the DPOY. So I’m trying to press the gas from now until the end of the season.”

The comment was striking not because it sounded unrealistic, but because it matched the scale of the season he is having and the standard he is already setting for himself at just 22 years old.

That quote also says something important about where Wembanyama is in his development. He is no longer speaking like a young star simply hoping to arrive. He is talking like a player who already sees himself in the middle of the league’s biggest conversations and understands that the final weeks of a season can shape how those races are remembered. San Antonio’s rise has made that belief easier to take seriously. The Spurs have climbed into the upper tier of the Western Conference, and Wembanyama has been central to that push with dominant two-way production.
