Paul Pierce Sees A Natural Fit In Atlanta For Jonathan Kuminga: “Make It A Running Game”

Paul Pierce believes Jonathan Kuminga’s early stretch with the Atlanta Hawks has highlighted something Golden State never consistently unlocked: a clean, system-level fit.

In a recent take, Pierce argued that Kuminga looks most effective when Atlanta plays into the identity it wants to build, forcing turnovers, pushing pace, and turning youth and athleticism into easy points before defenses can get set. In that environment, Pierce said, Kuminga “looks great,” because the game becomes about pressure, speed, and open-floor finishing rather than grinding through half-court possessions.

Pierce also pointed to the flip side. Where Kuminga can “struggle at times,” he said, is in the half court; the slower, more physical part of the game where possessions turn into reads, spacing discipline, and decision-making against a loaded defense. That’s been the swing skill for Kuminga throughout his career: the transition bursts are undeniable, but the next step is becoming just as reliable when the floor shrinks.

The larger implication of Pierce’s comment is a familiar one in today’s NBA: players don’t just succeed because of talent, they succeed when their team consistently puts them in the conditions where their strengths show up most often. If Atlanta can keep games fast, disruptive, and athletic, Pierce sees Kuminga as a “perfect fit.”
