The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as one of the more surprising teams this year. Victor Wembanyama’s growth was anticipated, but landing second in the Western Conference wasn’t something many projected.
Given their current form, it’s not hard to imagine fans getting behind them this postseason. The Spurs lack experience, but they’ve got an All-Star in De’Aaron Fox, an MVP candidate in Wembanyama, and supporting pieces like Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell. Notably, the Spurs have already beaten the Oklahoma City Thunder four times this season.
That growing belief isn’t limited to fans. Former NBA big man and current NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins has also jumped on the Spurs wave. The OKC Thunder may still be No. 1 in the West, but he sees San Antonio as a real threat to overtake them come playoff time.
“I don’t want Oklahoma to be mad at me, and I don’t want the organization to be upset. I’m a huge SGA fan. But the San Antonio Spurs are going to win it all this year. The Spurs are going to win the NBA championship this year. Not next year, not two years from now — this year.”
