David Adelman’s Trust In Spencer Jones: “He Knows Exactly What He Is”

Opportunity in the NBA often arrives the hard way – through injuries, shorthanded rotations, and the daily grind of staying ready. For the Denver Nuggets, that reality has helped elevate forward Spencer Jones from a two-way role into a standard NBA contract for the rest of the season, a move the team announced last week.

When asked what Jones has provided throughout the year after the conversion, Nuggets coach David Adelman framed it less as a sudden breakout and more as a long-running pattern the organization has trusted for months. Adelman described Jones as “one of the most consistent players,” and then offered what he called the best compliment he can give an NBA player: Jones “knows exactly what he is and never does what he can’t do.”

In Adelman’s telling, that clarity shows up on both ends. He pointed to Jones’ defensive versatility, guarding multiple positions, and to the straightforward, team-first offensive contributions that tend to earn minutes on contenders: spot-up shooting, cutting, screening, and playing within the flow. Adelman repeatedly returned to the same idea: trust. He said Jones has been “so trustworthy,” a player whose approach has remained steady from last summer through the season.

That “last summer” mattered in Adelman’s explanation. He credited Jones’ day-to-day work in Denver’s gym, pickup runs and routine reps, for building respect not only from the coaching staff, but also from the Nuggets’ core players. And when injuries opened a window during the season, Adelman said Jones took advantage of that situation without changing who he is or how he prepares.

The Nuggets’ decision to convert Jones’ deal formalizes what Adelman’s comments make clear: Denver views him as a culture fit and a reliable piece in a season that has demanded flexibility. With the standard contract now in place for the remainder of the year, Jones’ journey is no longer just a feel-good subplot, it’s part of the Nuggets’ present.
