Rui Hachimura has been steady for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, putting up 14.8 points on an efficient 55.4% shooting from the field. More importantly, he has settled into a role that fits what they need offensively and recently said he just wants to help the team win and is comfortable playing whatever role the coaching staff gives him.
“I’m not trying to be a superstar. … I’m just trying to help the team win – whatever they ask. I like my role here … I’m really trying to win the championship with this team. … So, I’m happy” – Rui Hachimura on his role with the Lakers pic.twitter.com/Ygd43t5Vie

But even with his positive and selfless approach, the discussion around him hasn’t gone away. The Lakers may be winning, but they still need more defense, and Hachimura’s low rebounding numbers, inconsistent stops, and expiring contract naturally place him in the spotlight.
Rui is an expiring deal. Are we really okay with giving him a 3-4 year deal worth 18-20+mil a year on this roster?
Personally I’d sell high, use him + filler to bring in a long term 3/D piece instead.

It’s a split conversation among Laker fans, but the idea isn’t as wild as it sounds. Rui is all in for the Lakers, but is a trade still the best option given their need for more reliable forward defense and less defensive load on an aging LeBron?
There are already plenty of fan-made proposals circulating online, but one of the more interesting ideas comes from Tyler Watts of Lake Show Life, who pointed to Trey Murphy III as the type of forward the Lakers could target if they choose to explore a Hachimura deal.
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Trey Murphy III and Karlo Matkovi
Chicago Bulls Receive: Rui Hachimura
New Orleans Pelicans Receive: Kevin Huerter, Maxi Kleber, two 1st round picks, two swaps, 2032 2nd round pick.
“The 25-year-old is the perfect fit for the Lakers’ timeline. He could join Luka and Austin Reaves as the franchise’s core pieces for the next decade. This would give Los Angeles the horses to compete for a championship this season and make them a title threat into the 2030s.
The Los Angeles Lakers should only trade Rui Hachimura if they are getting a significant upgrade. Trey Murphy III certainly offers that. He keeps improving and already has a strong relationship with Lakers head coach JJ Redick. This could be the perfect match if LA can make it happen.”
