Victor Wembanyama Eyes History After Spurs’ 4–0 Start: “Let’s Beat That Record”

Victor Wembanyama has already made a habit of rewriting expectations, but now he’s setting his sights on rewriting history. After leading the San Antonio Spurs to a dominant 121–103 win over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night, the 21-year-old phenom was informed during his postgame press conference that the franchise has never started a season 5–0.

His reaction? Equal parts disbelief and determination.

“Spurs never went 5-0? No… I’m surprised. I’m really surprised because the Spurs have the highest winning percentage in like the last 30 years, or whatever, right? Oh… let’s beat that record,” Wembanyama said.

The Spurs’ 4–0 start matches the best in franchise history, achieved only four times before, most recently in 2017. But never have they opened a season with five straight wins. With Wembanyama at the helm, that could change as early as Wednesday night.

Wembanyama has been nothing short of spectacular to open the 2025–26 campaign. Through four games, he’s averaging 27.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks per game, anchoring both ends of the floor and earning Western Conference Player of the Week honors.

What’s striking isn’t just Wembanyama’s production, it’s his mindset. The former No. 1 overall pick has embraced leadership responsibilities in just his second season, setting the tone for a young Spurs squad that includes fellow rising stars Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan.
