Russell Westbrook has never been one to back down from a challenge, and that includes the challenge of Father Time. As he enters his 18th NBA season with the Sacramento Kings, the former MVP made it clear: retirement isn’t even on his radar.
During his introductory press conference with the Kings, Westbrook was asked if this upcoming season might be his last. His response? A smirking,
“Yeah, right”.
That short but emphatic answer sent a clear message: the 36-year-old guard isn’t ready to hang up his sneakers anytime soon.

Westbrook signed a one-year veteran minimum deal with the Kings after declining his $3.5 million player option with the Denver Nuggets. Despite a lengthy free agency period that left some wondering if he’d return to the league at all, Westbrook remained adamant about continuing his NBA journey.
- “I’m grateful to be able to do this again,” he said, reflecting on his new opportunity.
Though no longer the triple-double machine that once redefined the stat sheet, Westbrook remains a valuable contributor. Last season with the Nuggets, he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds over 75 games, including 36 starts. His ability to adapt to a bench role and provide veteran leadership has extended his career and made him a sought-after presence in locker rooms.
With the Kings boasting a veteran-heavy roster that includes Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Dennis Schröder and Zach LaVine, Westbrook’s experience and energy could be a key ingredient in Sacramento’s playoff push. And if his words are any indication, he’s not just here for one last ride, he’s here to keep going.
