October 18, 1974, marked a historic moment in NBA history. On this day, Nate Thurmond made his debut for the Chicago Bulls and etched his name into the record books by becoming the first player ever to record a quadruple-double.
Facing the Atlanta Hawks in the Bulls’ season opener at Chicago Stadium, the 33-year-old Thurmond delivered a performance that was equal parts dominant and historic. His final stat line:
- 22 points
- 14 rebounds
- 13 assists
- 12 blocks
It was the first time in NBA history that a player had recorded double digits in four major statistical categories in a single game, a feat so rare that only three other players have matched it since.
Standing 6’11” and weighing 225 pounds, Thurmond was known for his physicality, shot-blocking prowess, and unselfish play. After spending 11 seasons with the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors, he joined the Bulls in the summer of 1974.
Thurmond’s quadruple-double remains one of the most iconic individual performances in NBA history. He would go on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and have his No. 42 jersey retired by both the Warriors and the Cavaliers.
