In his recent appearance on ‘The Young Man and The Three’ podcast, New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns shared the story of how he learned he was being traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves, a moment that caught him completely off guard and came with an unexpected punchline.
Towns, who had spent his entire NBA career with the Timberwolves since being drafted first overall in 2015, recalled the night Timberwolves President Tim Connelly showed up at his house with surprising urgency.
“I’m getting a call, you know. Tim wanted to come to the house to drop something off,” Towns said. “I was just like, ‘Oh well, just drop it off on Sunday, we have a team dinner anyway.’ He was very adamant that he wanted to come see me at the house.”
What followed was a surreal and unforgettable exchange.
“He came over. I would never forget [it was] 8:30. He came over to the house. Walked in the house with my dad and everyone there. And right away, the first words were like, ‘You’re starting your modeling career in New York.’ I was like What?”
The line, delivered with a mix of humor and gravity, signaled the end of Towns’ tenure in Minnesota and the beginning of a new chapter with the Knicks. The trade, finalized in October 2024, was part of a three-team deal that sent Julius Randle to the Timberwolves and brought Towns to New York.
