Giannis Antetokounmpo Only Desired New York Outside Milwaukee As Knicks And Bucks Held Talks

The New York Knicks came closer than many realized to landing one of the NBA’s biggest stars this past offseason. According to multiple reports, including ESPN’s Shams Charania, Giannis Antetokounmpo identified the Knicks as the only team he would have considered joining outside of Milwaukee, as the Bucks and Knicks quietly engaged in trade discussions.

While several franchises have long dreamed of prying the two‑time MVP away from the Bucks, sources say Antetokounmpo’s list was short, and exclusive. If he were to leave Milwaukee, New York was the only destination he desired.

Talks between the Bucks and Knicks reportedly stretched across several weeks in August, though no deal ever gained traction. Milwaukee made it clear they preferred to keep their superstar, while New York ultimately believed the Bucks were never serious about moving him.

The Knicks’ rise over the past two seasons has made them one of the league’s most attractive situations. With Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns anchoring a roster that reached the Eastern Conference Finals, New York has both the talent and the market appeal to entice a player of Giannis’ stature.

For Antetokounmpo, the Knicks represented the rare combination of a championship‑ready roster and the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.

Despite three straight first‑round playoff exits, the Bucks have remained steadfast in their commitment to Giannis. The franchise reshaped its roster this summer, moving on from Damian Lillard and Brook Lopez while adding Myles Turner to bolster the frontcourt. Milwaukee’s front office has insisted they are still building around their franchise cornerstone.

From their perspective, trading Antetokounmpo would only happen if he explicitly demanded it, something he has not done.

For now, Giannis remains in Milwaukee, preparing for his 13th season with the Bucks. But the revelation that New York was his only desired landing spot outside of Wisconsin will keep speculation alive throughout the year.

If the Bucks stumble again in the postseason, the Knicks could re‑emerge as the most logical suitor for one of the game’s greatest players.

Until then, the message is clear: if Giannis ever leaves Milwaukee, Madison Square Garden is the only other place he envisions himself.
