The Dallas Mavericks’ preseason opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder wasn’t just about the highly anticipated debut of No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg. It also marked the first look at veteran guard D’Angelo Russell in a Mavericks uniform; and the rookie wasted no time praising his new teammate’s influence.
After the game, Flagg spoke glowingly about Russell’s presence on and off the court, calling him a mentor and an example to follow.
“He’s been an incredible influence so far, just setting the tone at a really high level,” Flagg said. “Ever since he’s come in and been around, he’s just been setting examples and just being a real role model. Just playing really hard and just playing really smart as well. He sees the game at a different level, so I think I can just learn a lot from him in the way he’s able to pick apart defenses and just use his vision to our advantage.”

Russell’s first outing in Dallas colors was steady and efficient. He finished with five assists in limited minutes, showcasing the passing vision and composure that made him such a valuable addition to the Mavericks’ backcourt. His ability to orchestrate the offense gave Flagg and fellow starters Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson room to operate.
Flagg, meanwhile, impressed in his own debut. In just 14 minutes, the 18‑year‑old forward tallied 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and a block, flashing the versatility that made him the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. He emphasized afterward that he’s focused on keeping things simple, making the right play, and letting the game come to him.
For a Mavericks team entering a new era after the Luka Dončić trade, the early signs of chemistry between veterans and young stars are encouraging. With Kyrie Irving still sidelined, Russell’s leadership and playmaking will be crucial in easing Flagg’s transition to the NBA.
