NBA Faces Intense Backlash As Amazon Lets Fans Flash Live Bets On Screen During Games

The NBA’s bold new broadcast partnership with Amazon Prime Video is already sparking controversy. Just days into the rollout of its 11-year, $76 billion media rights deal with Disney, Comcast, and Amazon, fans are voicing outrage over a new feature that allows viewers to link their FanDuel accounts and display live bets directly on screen during games.

Amazon announced that its Prime Video streams will now include an OddsView overlay, enabling fans to track parlays, spreads, and prop bets in real time. While bets cannot be placed directly through Prime Video, the integration is designed to make wagering a seamless part of the viewing experience.

FanDuel, the NBA’s exclusive odds provider, hailed the move as a “significant milestone” in connecting with fans. Amazon executives framed it as part of their mission to “heighten and customize” the sports experience with interactive features.

But the reaction from fans has been overwhelmingly negative. Social media lit up with criticism, with many accusing the league of prioritizing gambling revenue over the integrity of the game.

  • “Adam Silver is destroying the game with sports betting,” one fan wrote.
  • Another added: “And we’re expected to believe when a player gets injured 2 points below their under/over it’s purely a coincidence?”
  • Others lamented the normalization of gambling: “I really hate how gambling has been ingrained into our daily lives… Kids are gonna start talking about gambling at 13 years old like it’s equivalent to playing sports”.

The backlash underscores a growing unease with how deeply sports betting has become embedded in professional sports broadcasts.

The NBA, which once fought to keep gambling at arm’s length, has leaned heavily into betting partnerships in recent years. Commissioner Adam Silver has described the league as a “highlight sport” built for modern consumption, but this latest move has many questioning whether the NBA has gone too far.

The NBA and Amazon are betting, literally, that fans will embrace the new interactive features as part of the future of sports broadcasting. But with backlash mounting, the league may face pressure to scale back or adjust how prominently betting is integrated into its broadcasts.
