Houston Rockets big man Steven Adams has always been one of the NBA’s most colorful personalities, and his latest story about teammate Kevin Durant proves it once again. Speaking at Rockets Media Day, Adams recalled a recent fishing trip with Durant that turned into both a test of endurance and a reminder of their bond dating back to their Oklahoma City Thunder days.

Adams described how Durant, now 37 and entering his first season with Houston, battled a massive yellowfin tuna during an offseason trip in the Bahamas.

“It was pretty good, eh? He did pretty well, man. It was a pretty big fish. It was about seven minutes of him freaking trying to reel it in. It was a pretty good battle, but he got tired, bro. I had to sub in a little bit. But, yeah, he managed to land it, so he’s good,” Adams said.

Even after hauling in the giant fish, Adams joked that Durant’s reaction was as stoic as ever.

“This guy just pulls in a freaking yellowfin and I don’t think he realizes how big of a deal it is, because his whole reaction was just like …” Adams said, mimicking Durant’s stone-faced expression. “Bro, I’m there freaking, ‘Ahhhh! Like we just won a freaking championship,’ and he’s just like, ‘It’s cool.’ Alright, dude”.

The fishing trip wasn’t the first time Adams and Durant shared time on the water. Back when they were teammates in Oklahoma City from 2013 to 2016, the two would occasionally fish at a stocked lake owned by Thunder owner Clay Bennett. Adams laughed about those days, calling it “like a big goldfish tank” where you were guaranteed to catch something.

But beyond the laughs, Adams made sure to highlight the respect he has for Durant as both a player and a person.

“He was cool, bro. Solid dude, good teammate. He wasn’t a dick or anything. He was a good man, bro,” Adams said, summing up his time with Durant in OKC.

Now reunited in Houston after Durant’s blockbuster trade from Phoenix this summer, the two veterans are expected to play key roles in guiding a young Rockets team with championship aspirations. Their off-court chemistry, as the fishing story shows, is already strong.
