NBC Sports Courtside Revolution: NBA Analysts To Join Team Benches For Real-Time Insights

NBC Sports is shaking up the way basketball is broadcast with a bold new initiative that places NBA analysts directly courtside, right next to team benches. Dubbed “On the Bench,” this innovative format will debut during the 2025–26 season and promises to deliver unprecedented access to the inner workings of NBA teams during live games.

Inspired by NBC’s “Inside the Glass” approach from its NHL coverage, “On the Bench” will feature one analyst assigned to each team, seated near assistant coaches and within earshot of timeouts and huddles. These analysts won’t just observe, they’ll listen in and relay real-time insights, offering viewers a deeper understanding of strategy, chemistry, and in-the-moment decision-making.

NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood emphasized the uniqueness of the format:

“Never before has a game featured an analyst dedicated exclusively to each team with such unparalleled access.”

This courtside analyst setup will be exclusive to 23 Monday night games streamed on Peacock, starting October 27 with the Cavaliers vs. Pistons matchup. Analysts Robbie Hummel and Austin Rivers will kick off the format, representing Cleveland and Detroit respectively.

The analysts will also embed with their teams before tip-off, attending shootarounds, locker room sessions, and pregame meetings. This immersive approach ensures commentary is not only reactive but deeply informed by team dynamics and preparation.
