NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has once again proven that his generosity extends far beyond the basketball court. In a heartwarming gesture, O’Neal gifted 18-year-old collegiate wrestler Tamara Humphries a brand-new 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander after learning she was struggling to get to practices and tournaments due to a lack of reliable transportation.
Humphries, a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and one of the region’s most promising female wrestlers, had been working long hours at a local restaurant all summer to save up for a car. Known by her nickname “The Firefly,” she built a reputation for her grit and determination, qualities that caught Shaq’s attention through social media.
Moved by her story, O’Neal reached out via Instagram, initially surprising Humphries with a casual DM.
“I was like, ‘Uh, is this real?’” she recalled.
But it was very real. Shaq even FaceTimed her parents to confirm his intentions.
With help from Effortless Motors and Palm Palm restaurant in East Liberty, O’Neal personally delivered the SUV to Humphries, turning an ordinary day into an unforgettable moment. The Outlander, known for its reliability and spacious design, is now helping her juggle classes, practices, and competitions with ease.
Humphries began wrestling at Brashear High School, where she went 5–15 in her first season, competing mostly against boys. But she didn’t quit. Her relentless work ethic earned her a full-ride scholarship and a growing fan base online. Her father described her as “all business” on the mat, pacing with headphones on, ready to dominate.
Now, with Shaq’s support, she’s aiming even higher.
“I’m going to keep the journey going, live for everybody, and we’re all going to do this together and get some Olympic titles,” she said.
In a video message accompanying the gift, O’Neal offered both encouragement and playful advice:
“You keep body slamming people, you keep listening, and you keep your grades up. I love you, and no boys. Stay away from them boys,” he joked.
