For years, NBA fans have chuckled, and sometimes winced, at Carmelo Anthony’s unmistakable rebounding ritual. Whenever Melo snatched a board, he’d shout with full conviction:
“I got it, f**k outta here!”
It became a viral moment, a meme, and a signature phrase that followed him from Denver to New York to Portland. Now, the 10-time All-Star has finally explained the origins of his colorful catchphrase.
During an appearance on the Late Show with Steven Colbert, Anthony revealed that the shout wasn’t just for show—it was a declaration of ownership.
“People used to steal my rebounds,” Melo said. “Every time I start rebounding I am going to let everybody know that this is my rebound… gotta plant your flag.”

For Anthony, rebounding wasn’t just about stats, it was about asserting dominance in the paint. The phrase became a psychological tool, a way to stake his claim and send a message to teammates and opponents alike: this board belongs to me.
Anthony elaborated that the shout was part of his mental preparation.
“I’m coming with the whole mindset, focus, and motivation to get that rebound and being aggressive on the glass,” he said. “It’s a mind game when I prepare myself to go and get those rebounds. I love rebounding.”
Though Melo was never known as a rebounding specialist, he consistently averaged around 6–7 boards per game throughout his career, often grabbing crucial defensive rebounds in tight moments. His vocal claim became a way to energize himself and keep others out of his lane.
