As the Golden State Warriors navigate a quiet and uncertain offseason, franchise icon Stephen Curry is making his voice heard, and he’s using it to advocate for a familiar face.
According to NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Curry has been in direct contact with free agent guard Gary Payton II, urging the Warriors to bring back the defensive specialist on a two-year deal.
“Steph Curry’s voice carries weight in Golden State,” Robinson reported. “And once again the franchise cornerstone is making his stance clear. I’m told Curry has been in direct contact with Gary Payton II, pushing for the Warriors to bring the defensive ace back on a two-year deal.”
Payton II, who played a pivotal role in the Warriors’ 2022 championship run, has remained a fan favorite thanks to his relentless defense, high-energy play, and seamless chemistry with Curry. His ability to guard multiple positions and disrupt opposing offenses made him a key piece in Golden State’s defensive schemes. Though injuries slowed him last season, his impact when healthy was undeniable.
The mutual interest is strong. Robinson noted that Payton himself is eager to return to the Bay Area, and with Curry’s endorsement, the conversation has shifted “from possibility to priority”.
However, the Warriors’ front office has been slow to act. The team has yet to make a major move this offseason, largely due to unresolved contract negotiations with forward Jonathan Kuminga. Until that situation is resolved, verbal agreements with Payton II, Al Horford, and De’Anthony Melton remain in limbo.
Draymond Green has reportedly joined Curry in backing Payton’s return, adding further pressure on the front office to finalize the deal. With training camp approaching and roster depth still a concern, Curry’s push for Payton II could be the spark that reignites Golden State’s offseason.
For Curry, this isn’t just about loyalty, it’s about winning. And when the Warriors’ leader speaks, the organization tends to listen.
