In professional sports, appearances and optics often matter just as much as performance. That sentiment was front and center this week when respected sportscaster Dan Patrick took aim at rookie Bronny James, criticizing his absence from Luka Dončić’s press conference after the superstar signed a record-breaking three-year, $165 million extension with the Lakers.
On his nationally syndicated show, Patrick didn’t mince words:
“Bronny James should’ve been there. You’re the last guy on the roster, you should be there.”

His comments reflect an old-school mentality grounded in the idea of team solidarity, especially from younger players trying to earn their stripes. Patrick implied that skipping such a landmark moment, especially for a teammate cemented as a franchise cornerstone, may come off as a lack of respect or awareness on Bronny’s part.
The timing of Bronny’s absence is what seems to have fueled the debate. Reports indicate that both Bronny and his father, LeBron James, were vacationing and golfing together rather than attending the event. While LeBron reportedly FaceTimed Dončić to offer congratulations, Patrick suggested Bronny missed an opportunity to show commitment.
“That’s when you say, ‘Dad, I need to be there. That’s my teammate. That’s my future.’” Patrick added.
Bronny, selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, played limited minutes last season and remains on the fringe of the rotation. For a player still proving his worth beyond his famous last name, every chance to demonstrate maturity and team-first mentality could be pivotal.
