Why now? This extension not only keeps Doncic out of free agency next summer, it also sets him up for a potential five-year, $417 million supermax deal in 2028. That figure would be the largest in NBA history, reflecting his elite status and the Lakers’ belief in his long-term value.

Just six months ago, Doncic’s trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers stunned the basketball world. Swapped for Anthony Davis in a blockbuster deal, the Slovenian superstar quickly became the heartbeat of the Lakers’ offense, averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists over 28 games.
His chemistry with LeBron James and leadership on and off the court helped the Lakers clinch the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Though they fell short in the playoffs, Doncic’s impact was undeniable, and now, the Lakers are building their future around him.
In tandem with his contract announcement, Doncic also pledged $5 million through the Luka Doncic Foundation to support 77 young athletes worldwide, ages 12 to 15.
“Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation,” he wrote.
This gesture underscores Doncic’s growing role as not just a basketball icon, but a global ambassador for the sport.
With offseason additions like Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, both reportedly recruited by Doncic himself, the Lakers are gearing up for a serious title run. And with LeBron entering his 23rd season, the torch is clearly being passed.
