Indiana Pacers point guard TJ McConnell has built his reputation on grit, hustle, and defensive tenacity. But even the league’s peskiest defender has his limits, and according to McConnell, those limits are defined by one man: Kyrie Irving.
In a recent appearance on The Christian Kuntz Podcast, McConnell didn’t hesitate when asked who the toughest player he’s ever had to guard.
“Kyrie Irving,” he said. “The ball’s on a string. You’re on an island, and you just don’t know what he’s gonna do. You could force him one way, but he still ends up getting the way you don’t want him to go.”
McConnell’s description wasn’t just about physical difficulty, it was psychological.
“His handle is impeccable. He’s got the greatest handle I’ve seen. It’s a tough place to be mentally when you’re guarding Kyrie,” he added.

Irving, meanwhile, is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in March, but his impact remains undeniable. His 2024–25 season included an All-Star, reminding fans and critics alike that his game still commands respect at the highest level.
