Kevin Durant’s Preferred Trade Destinations Reportedly Off The Table

As the NBA offseason ramps up, Kevin Durant’s future remains one of the league’s most intriguing storylines. But according to a report from Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, the former MVP may already be facing closed doors from his top choices.

Durant, who reportedly expressed interest in being traded to either the Boston Celtics or New York Knicks at the February 2025 trade deadline, has seen both options fade from possibility. O’Connor wrote,

“Durant has already been denied by his top choices. There were rumblings at the trade deadline KD wanted to land with the Celtics or Knicks. New York’s interest reportedly isn’t mutual anymore. Boston’s cap sheet and trajectory make that scenario highly unlikely.”

The Celtics, once viewed as a potential Durant destination, are now deep into the luxury tax and dealing with the fallout of Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury, which could sideline him for most of next season. With their payroll ballooning and a need to rebalance the roster, adding Durant’s $50+ million salary is financially and strategically implausible.

As for the Knicks, their stance appears to have shifted. While Durant was once linked to New York during his 2019 free agency, the franchise reportedly has no current interest in pursuing him. After a strong playoff run that ended in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks are focused on internal development and long-term flexibility.

Durant, who averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists last season, remains one of the league’s most efficient scorers—even at age 36. But with his preferred destinations off the table, attention now turns to other suitors. Reports suggest that the Spurs, Heat, and Rockets are among the teams Durant would be open to joining.

The Phoenix Suns, meanwhile, are weighing their options. While they’ve fielded offers, none have met their asking price. With Durant entering the final year of his contract, the clock is ticking for both sides to find a resolution that aligns with their timelines.
