Two of the NBA’s most accomplished veteran point guards—Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul—are reportedly targeting the same unexpected destination this offseason: the Phoenix Suns. According to NBA insider Flex From Jersey, both players have expressed interest in joining the Suns, setting the stage for a potential reunion in the desert that few saw coming.
The Suns are entering a transitional phase after a disappointing 2024–25 campaign that saw them finish 11th in the Western Conference with a 36–46 record. With Kevin Durant’s future uncertain and the team in need of veteran leadership and backcourt depth, Phoenix could be an intriguing landing spot for both Westbrook and Paul.
Westbrook, who played for the Denver Nuggets last season, is expected to decline his $3.5 million player option and test free agency. He averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game, and has reportedly been trying to land in Phoenix for the past three years.
Paul, meanwhile, spent the season with the San Antonio Spurs, posting 8.8 points and 7.4 assists per game. Though he’s expressed a desire to play closer to his family in Los Angeles, his successful stint with the Suns from 2020 to 2023—which included a trip to the NBA Finals—makes Phoenix a familiar and potentially appealing option.
While both players are ball-dominant guards, their roles at this stage of their careers could complement each other. Westbrook brings explosiveness and energy, while Paul offers poise and playmaking. If used strategically—perhaps with one leading the second unit—they could provide the Suns with a veteran backcourt tandem capable of stabilizing a young, evolving roster.
With Durant trade rumors swirling and Phoenix’s front office evaluating its next steps, the addition of either—or both—of these veterans could signal a shift toward short-term competitiveness while maintaining flexibility.
Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook would love to play in Phoenix:
“This is not me guessing, this is not me throwing something at the wall. Both CP3 and Westbrook are guys that could be on this team. Westbrook has been trying to go to Phoenix for 3 years.”
