Former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins found himself at the center of controversy during a Puerto Rican professional basketball league game on Monday night.
Playing for Mets de Guaynabo, Cousins was ejected late in a 101-91 loss to Vaqueros de Bayamon, but the drama didn’t end there. As he walked toward the tunnel, fans threw beer and food at him, sparking a heated confrontation that required security intervention.
Cousins had already been involved in a courtside altercation earlier in the game, where he exchanged gestures with a heckling fan. Video footage shows Cousins grabbing his crotch in response to the fan’s taunts before things escalated. Later, after his ejection, another fan threw beer at him, enraging Cousins, who attempted to charge into the stands before being restrained by security guards.
The chaotic scene drew comparisons to the infamous “Malice at the Palace” incident from 2004, when Ron Artest and other Indiana Pacers players fought with fans in Detroit. Fortunately, security was able to prevent Cousins from entering the crowd, avoiding a full-scale brawl.
Cousins’ frustration was evident as he pushed back against security, struggling to break free before eventually being escorted into the locker room. The incident has raised questions about fan behavior and player reactions in high-pressure environments.

While Cousins has yet to publicly comment on the altercation, the Puerto Rican league will review the incident and consider disciplinary action. The Mets de Guaynabo, coached by former Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea, are struggling this season, sitting near the bottom of the standings with a 9-18 record.
Cousins, who last played in the NBA during the 2021–22 season, has been continuing his career overseas, including stints in China and Puerto Rico. His second tenure with Mets de Guaynabo has been marked by strong performances, but this latest incident could impact his future in the league.
