Robert Horry Warns Luka Doncic: “Your Offense Is Worthless Without Defense”

In the world of basketball, offensive brilliance can make headlines, but defensive lapses can cost championships. Robert Horry, a seven-time NBA champion known for his clutch performances, has issued a stark warning to Luka Doncic: if he doesn’t improve his defense, his offensive skills won’t matter.

During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Horry dismissed concerns about Doncic’s weight and instead focused on what he believes is the real issue—his defensive commitment.

“It’s so weird that people talk about his weight, but yet he’s still giving people 30 points,” Horry said. “I tell people, I don’t care about his weight. You need to get him in a gym and teach him how to play defense”.

Horry emphasized that scoring alone isn’t enough.

“You can give someone 40 points, but if you’re giving up 35 on the other end, those 40 points don’t mean anything,” he explained.

His message was clear: defense is a mindset, not just a skill.

Doncic’s defensive shortcomings became glaring after his trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, and weaknesses were exposed—especially in the first-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Opposing guards, particularly Anthony Edwards, relentlessly attacked Doncic in isolation, exploiting his lack of lateral quickness.

Horry pointed out that Doncic has the physical tools to be a better defender but lacks the desire to commit on that end of the floor.

“If you can move your feet and blow by people, that means you have some fast-twitch muscles. You can move pretty fast. So there’s no reason you cannot play better defense—you just have to want to”.

The criticism from Horry aligns with a growing consensus around the league: Doncic must evolve defensively if he wants to lead the Lakers to a championship. While his offensive brilliance is undeniable, playoff basketball has a way of exposing weak links. If he doesn’t improve his defense, elite teams will continue to target him as a liability.
