Lou Williams Pushes Back On Rushing Nikola Jokic Into All-Time Great Conversations

Nikola Jokic already has a championship, a Finals MVP, three regular-season MVPs, seven All-Star appearances, and just finished a season averaging a triple-double. He makes the game look easy in a way that only a few all-time greats have, and with each year, his resume becomes harder to ignore.

The numbers are there for Jokic, and the playoff success is there too. If he adds another ring or two, it becomes even harder to deny his place among the greatest players of all time. As if fans aren’t already debating that and putting him close to the upper echelon of players. Still, former NBA player Lou Williams isn’t buying into that just now and steps in to remind everyone that some conversations can wait.

“When Russell Westbrook was averaging a triple-double for two or three seasons…we didn’t make the argument that he’s a top-10 player of all time.”

It’s fair to look at Russell Westbrook’s run and wonder if the bar for greatness is being moved too quickly. Lou’s point speaks to that hesitation. At the same time, Jokic has accomplished things that put him on a different track. It’s possible the conversation started a bit early, but Jokic’s play keeps giving it reasons to continue.

Right now, Jokic is just trying to win another ring. The Denver Nuggets took care of the Los Angeles Clippers and already stole Game 1 from the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. How far they go this year could say a lot about Jokic’s place in history.
