The NBA world is bidding farewell to one of its greatest coaching minds, as Gregg Popovich officially steps down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs after an illustrious 29-season career. Among those reflecting on Popovich’s impact is Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who shared heartfelt words about his longtime mentor.

Ahead of the Warriors’ Game 6 matchup against the Houston Rockets, Kerr took a moment to honor Popovich, arriving at his pregame press conference wearing a custom “Thanks, Pop!” T-shirt. With deep admiration, Kerr expressed his gratitude:

“Pop is one of the most important people in my life for many, many reasons. Most of them go way beyond basketball.”

Kerr, who played under Popovich for four seasons with the Spurs, credited him for shaping his career both as a player and a coach. He acknowledged the profound influence Popovich has had on the NBA, calling it an “emotional day” for the league and the Spurs organization.

Popovich retires as the NBA’s all-time wins leader, with 1,422 career victories and five championships to his name. His coaching tree is one of the most extensive in league history, with former assistants like Mike Budenholzer, Ime Udoka, and Taylor Jenkins now leading their own teams. Kerr himself is a product of Popovich’s mentorship, having transitioned from a player to a championship-winning coach with the Warriors.

Beyond basketball, Popovich was known for his outspoken nature, advocating for social justice and player empowerment throughout his career. His leadership extended beyond the court, making him one of the most respected figures in sports.

While stepping away from coaching, Popovich will remain involved with the Spurs as team president, ensuring his influence continues within the organization. Kerr acknowledged this transition, stating:

“It’s a sad day, but also an encouraging one. This is a natural transition for him, and it gives him the space and time he needs to recover from his health issues.”

Popovich had been absent for much of the 2024-25 season due to health concerns, including a mild stroke suffered in November. His decision to step down marks the end of an era, but his presence in the Spurs’ front office ensures his legacy will endure.

As the league celebrates Popovich’s contributions, Kerr’s tribute serves as a reminder of the lasting impact he has had on players, coaches, and the sport itself. While the Spurs move forward under new leadership, Popovich’s influence will remain woven into the fabric of the NBA.
