The Nets Might Break Up Their Big 3 Already & Trade Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving appeared in 54 games for the Brooklyn Nets this season, averaging 26.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game on 50.6% shooting from the field. As far as the playoffs is concerned, Kyrie’s hopes with the team didn’t go according to plan as he was sidelined due to an injury, disrupting Brooklyn’s chances of advancing much further.

The Nets point guard signed a four-year deal with the Nets in 2019, and now has two years left with a player option remaining on his deal. Kyrie, as part of the Nets’ ‘Big 3’, does not appear going anywhere given how the Nets have seen success with Irving on the court. Or is he?

Appearing on the Celtics Lab 52 podcast, author Matt Sullivan hinted that the Nets might be willing to break up their Big 3, and trade Irving:

“I’ve heard that Nets ownership was quite upset with Kyrie’s ‘pause,’ especially that maskless party that turned his psuedo-paternity leave into more like a COVID suspension,” Sullivan said. “And in the last week I’ve heard rumblings — whispers, really, because cracking the Nets is kind of like breaking into the Kremlin — that Brooklyn GM Sean Marks would maybe, possibly, apparently be willing to at least listen to a trade offer for Kyrie this offseason.”

“Now, I’m not sure what the market for Kyrie is at this point,” Sullivan said. “It’s not like Ben Simmons giving you the headache on the court. It’s that complex personality that comes from off the court. I think it’s been annoying some people in the franchise. I can’t speak to his teammates, who obviously want to play with one of the world’s best and get him back there.”
