Kyle Lowry Was Interested In Joining The Spurs, But The Spurs Weren’t Interested In Lowry

This past offseason, Kyle Lowry announced he will opt-out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Lowry was interested in joining a winning culture. The San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers were the most named teams as possible landing spots for the All Star.  Apparently, Lowry was very interested in joining the Spurs, but the rumors didn’t turn out to be true and the Spurs never were interested in acquiring him.

This is what Kyle Lowry told Jabari Young of the San Antonio Express-News:

“It was real for me,” Lowry told the Express-News, “but it wasn’t real for them. That’s a part of the business that people don’t know. I would have loved to come here, but it didn’t work out. The conversation didn’t happen. If the conversation happened, I would tell you. But it didn’t happen.

“Not saying that I wanted out, but I did look at teams to see what was going on,” said Lowry. “I mean this place would’ve been a great place.”

Since the team he wanted to play for didn’t want him, Lowry stayed in Toronto and signed a three-year, $100 million contract. But if this is true, I don’t understand the Spurs, who would have had the space (after Gasol opted out) to sign Lowry to a similar deal. With Parker not really getting any younger, Lowry could have been the perfect fit to form another Big 3 with Kawhi Leonard (when healthy) and LaMarcus Aldridge.
